Single Aviation Industry Workshop

The two hour panel discussion and workshop will bring together leaders from the Defence and civil aviation industries, to discuss how further collaboration is needed to support a more sustainable aviation industry in Australia. The panel will be challenged to consider how the barriers currently preventing a single industry can be resolved, and in doing so consider how this would benefit both industries and the wider Australian economy.

Speakers:

Mike Kalms
Lead Partner for Defence Industry, KPMG Australia.

Mike is KPMG’s Lead Partner for Australian Defence Industry and Space. He is a veteran program designer and stakeholder management expert with over 25 years commercial and Defence experience. This expertise extends into strategy creation and analysis where Mike has advised all levels of Government on their Defence and industry portfolios, ambitions and plans. He is a LinkedIn contributor and regular moderator at Defence events. Mike was a member of the Expert Panel appointed by Government to oversee the 2016 Defence White Paper, he is the author of several state and federal government defence industry development strategies, has a strong set of relationships across the corporate sector, and is a vocal supporter of Australia’s defence and space business communities as they grow to become a vibrant part of our national advanced manufacturing and services sectors.

ARCDRE James Hood 
Previously Director General, Defence Aviation Safety Authority.

James “Hoody” has just completed a posting as the First Director-General, Defence Aviation Safety Authority, during which he lead the introduction of the new Defence Aviation Safety Regulation (DASR). His career highlights include many senior engineering roles in the acquisition and sustainment of Defence aircraft, for which he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2008 for outstanding achievement in the field of capital acquisition.

As a strong advocate for the new DASR, he is an active champion of the emerging international convention in military airworthiness regulation and the greater alignment of military and civil regulations to support a single aviation sector within Australia.

Jonathan Aleck is head of Legal and Regulatory Affairs at the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

Dr Aleck earned his law degree at Loyola University. He holds a BA degree in psychology and a MA degree in political science from the University of Oregon, and a PhD in law from the Australian National University.

He served two terms as president of the Australian Institute of Administrative Law and is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Dr Aleck was Australia’s representative on the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization from 1998 to 2003.

Dr Jonathan Aleck
